The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an educational, participational organization that researches and recreates the Middle Ages "as they ought to have been." Focused on pre-17th-century Europe, the Society's “Known World” consists of 20 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members and many more participants residing in countries around the world. The SCA focuses on participation, not passive spectating. Members dress in garb of the Middle Ages and Renaissance while attending tournaments, royal courts, feasts, dancing, classes & workshops, and more.

History[]

The SCA marks its beginning with the "First Tournament," held in Berkeley, California, on May 1, 1966 CE. It was held as a backyard party at the home of UC Berkeley medieval studies graduate Diana Paxson, who would later become a successful author. Paxson wrote about it in a fanzine as the "Last Tournament," but it was renamed as it became the first of many tournaments of the SCA.

Participants wore largely improvised costumes, helmets, and fencing masks. They sparred using swords of plywood, fencing foils, and padded maces. As 1960s Berkeley was a prime spot for protests, they marched down Telegraph Avenue singing Greensleeves in a protest against the 20th century.

The Berkeley Society for Creative Anachronism soon dropped the "Berkeley" as it expanded. (The name was coined by science fiction author Marion Zimmer Bradley. Science fiction author Poul Anderson was another early member). The SCA was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in California in October 1968 C.E. However, it still begins its year on May 1 in honor of the First Tournament, meaning each SCA year ends on April 30. Thus May 1, 1966 C.E. is May 1, Anno Societatis (A.S.) I, while April 30, 2017 C.E. was April 30, A.S. LI.

The First Tournament is considered the beginning of both the SCA and the West Kingdom.
